New Interior Furnishings For Märklin Dining Car 29857

As part of a digital premium starter set (29857), Märklin brought this dining car, which's prototype was a rebuilt from accelerated train passanger car. Unluckily, Märklin didin't see any necessarity to change the interior furnishings, which was extremly disturbing the good looks of this beautiful model, like one can see it on the picuture above.

However, it isn't a great problem to change this mistake!

We only need the interior furnishings of another dining car, which we adapt for this particular model!

First Step

We start our conversion by dismantling the car. Important: The shell is not only being clipsed on the chassis - it is also hold by the two gangway bellows. So remove them first!

The Interior Furnishing

Here we see the new interior furnishing in its original condtion. Originally, thist was supposed to be the furnishing of als Liliput "Schürzenwagen", however one can take as well the interior furnishings of other cars!

On this picture, it has already been cut into pieces. The kitchen compartment will reach about three windows!

On this picture we also see the parts wich have been cut out. However, I had to rework later on, so that the configuration of the seats was fitting with that of the windows and the tables were standing in the middle of the windows.

The completed interior furnishing. Unluckily, the seats had the same breadth after reworking the parts; however I put in some Preiser figures so the different breadth can't be seen. The several sections of the interior furnihsing were assembled using superglue, then some of the edges were cleaned with emery paper.

The Windows

The next step were the windows. Either you paint them with white colour from inside, or you put some white paper behind the three kitchen windows, like it can be seen on the picture.

The exterior side of the windows.

Final Works

When assembling the car again, please take care to fit furnishing fitting with the windows! If necessary, justify it with some cardborad pieces, which can also be used to model the floor of the two entrance rooms! Otherwise, one could look trough the windows on the mechanism of the coupling shafts.

The converted car has become a very beautiful model:

If you want, you can continue the conversion with several other steps. For example, one could model table lamps with LEDs, like Märklin has done it for the DRG Rheingold cars!

Result

The car looks very much better now, after the conversion. One can use the old interior furnishing for other cars or keep it, so that he can rebuild the car later on (however, will anybody really do that?)
