Repairing A Märklin Model Train Box

Often, older model train boxes – espacially those from Märklin, with a kind of hinged cover, are torn at the edges. To repair the damage, many people just wrap such boxes with adhesive tape. This is, however, the wrongest way one can choose to repair a damaged model train box. Often, people even use brown (!) package tape!

But it makes more sense, to tape only the torn sections. To learn how to proceed, have a look at the pictures below. Only use only high quality, clear-film tape.

First of all, the box has to be unfolded carefully. Then, it is being laid on a table. Now, taping can begin. Press the unfolded box on the table. Avoid any bubbles or folds of the tape – if they appear nevertheless, try to remove them at once. At the edges, upbend the tape.

After all repairs have been done, fold the box together again.

But what are the advantages of this more elaborate repair? First of all, all functions of the box remain – so the Styrofoam part can still be taken out after unfolding the box, to put the maintenance manual below it – like Märklin had practiced it for a long time.
