Fitting Märklin Dining Car 4024 With Interior Furnishings

Nearly every model railroader who operates Märklin 24cm cars also has model #4024, a DSG dining car. Unlickily. this model has no interior furnishing. Especially if it is running in a train toghether with cars which have interior furnishings, this does'nt look quite good.

However it is difficult to dismantle that specific car because of the construction of its chassis, so I decided for interior furnishings consisting of several seperate sections which are individually fitted into the car.

At the time this model was produced, Märklin also offered a special kit which allowed model railroaders to equip 4024 cars with interior furnishings. I had some rests of such a kit, however, they were not enough to fit a complete car. Sometimes, these old kits (they had the catalog number 0224) are offered on Ebay, but I was not willing to pay the prices they are bidding there. It would have been much more than the model's worth!

The Interior Furnishings

Here, one can see the simple construction I choosed: some thin cardboard, in this case I took some index cards and cut them into fitting stripes. These cards are lined, which is an important advantage: one can cut along these line, and doesn't have to draw them first. At one side, we are carving an edge so we can bend a strap. The benches were taken from a Trix interior furnishing: they were sawed out and cleanded with a file afterwards .

With the strap, the seatings are clamped below the window panes later on. Because there are some sheet metal straps in the middle of the car's floor - their purpose is to hold parts of the chassis - the seatings are holding very well!

The tables were also made of pieced cut out from index cards; however also small woodern pieces can be used for that.

The kitchen compartment is a rest of an old Märklin kit 0224. I glued a cardboard strip below this part so it could also be clamped below the window panes.

Final steps

My car had outworn wheelsets. That's a problem of many old Märklin wheel sets. Until the 1990ies, Märklin used wheel sets which weren't protected against corrosion in a very reasonable manner: they weren't plated with nickel.

But there's an easy solution for that problem: changing the wheel sets! Look at the homepage of Luck Feinmechanik, where you will find wheel sets for nearly every car from nearly every manufacturer! For older Märklin 24cm you need wheel sets with a diameter of 11,4 mm!

Result

After being fitted with interior furnishings, the car looks far better than before - especially if it's operated together with other cars with interor furnishings!
