Märklin 4278 Baggage Car With Rear Lights

For many series of passenger cars, the manufacturers are offering special cars which are equiped with rear lights. They are an eye-catcher at the end of every train. Such a model is, for example, the Fleischmann car #5638. If you order the special pickup shoe, the car can be operated also on AC layouts

The rear lighting of that car has very finely detailed laterns, and a constant lighting due to the use of LEDs.

Unlickily such cars aren't offered for all series of passanger cars. So there's the question if one can equip a "normal" car with such rear lights, using spare parts of model #5638.

The answer is: Yes, it's possible!

The picture shows the spare parts we need:

#625638 contains the board with the LEDs and the covering

#195638 contains the light transmission set and the rear laterns.

First Step

We start dismantling the car. First, both gangway bellows have to be removed, then the shell which is snapped on the chassis. The gangway bellows have to be removed first, because they have special retaining collars additionally connecting the chassis and the shell.

Power Tak-Off

Then we install the pickup shoe an the wheel contacts.

The chassis after installing pickup shoe and wheel contacts. The wheel sets should be cleaned, or replaced by new ones. Otherwise, there could be problems with the power take-off.

Preparing The Shell

Now we drill two holes for the light transmission sets with a gimlet. We have to use a 2,5 mm drill head. Afterwards, remove the burrs.

Before starting with drilling, the windows have to be dismantled!

Also the windows have to be reworked. The lower section has to be removed, up to the bottom frame of the side window. Afterwards, the windows can be re-installed in the car, however they have to be glued now.

Installing The Lighting Parts

Here whe see the light transmission set on the left picture, and the covering on the right picture. Both parts are now installed in the prepared shell.

The installiation of the light transmission set.

Now also the covering has been isntalled. The covering has to be fixed with a drop of glue. Not the light transmission set however - we must sillt be able to adjust it after the istallation of the rear laterns!

The board with the LEDs is glued on a pertinax or plastic piece, and connected with the pickup shoe and the wheel contacts. The distance between the LEDs and the light transmission set musn't be too large, so the plastic piece is necessary.

Final Works

The completed car. Of course, a moved into gangway bellow.

Moreover, I have replaced the old Märklin wheelsets. They are defiling very easily. I replaced them by wheelsets from  Luck Feinmechanik.

We need axles with a wheel diameter of  10,4 mm and 24,40 mm axles!

Anything Else Which Can Be Done?

Of course, an interior lighting can be installed. As well as the car can be equiped with a decoder, so that the rear lights can be switched out. Also some optical tuning is possible.

Shopping List

Allthough all necessary parts were already enumerated, I prepared this small list:

1 Märklin 414940 Pickup Shoe
1 Märklin 210240 Wheel Contact
