Only Cardboard? |
Yes! The houses presented on these sites are made of cardboard! Not everybody likes this material, allthough it is ideal especially for smaller houses! You can achieve good results with cardboard, but of course there are also limits - for larger buildings it's better to use plastic. It is also shown how to use the well-known cardboard wall sheets (like they are produced by Vollmer and other manufacturers) for the construction of buildings

This building was one of my first really usable self-made houses around 1993. Together with antorher house, it was glued on a cardboard sheet serving as a base plate. After being painted with grey colour, this base plate had warped. I tried to straighten it out again, but nontheless, the whole ensemble had certain faults. So I decided in early 2000 to rework this model basicaly. First, I removed all the buildings from the base plate.

| The windowns were one of the house's largest faults. Only the first floor had "real" windows with a frame, all the other windows were only made of transparant paper; on which the window frames and bars had been drawn with a thin felt pen and a ruler. So, all these "dummies" had to be replaced by real windows. | ![]() |

Originally, all of the extenstions outer walls were sandstone walls. That was not very realistic for building like this one, so these walls were plasterd. Some walls parts were completely replaced with new ones. The main part of the house got a new, better fitting roof. The remaining sandstone wall got the lettering "Steiger GmbH", over the large store window a company nameboard was installed. After this "beauty treatment", the whole building now looks much more attractive. |
2. Baker's Shop
This house is another cardboard structure. Only some of the window frames and
the roof consist of plastic. However, a thicker cardboard material was used for this one, which improved the stability.
The masses of the wall parts were drawn, as usual, with pencil on the cardboard. Afterwards all parts were cut out. Again, Plaka colours found a use for painting the outer walls which had been "plastered" with whitender. A part of the window frames came from Auhagen, the others were manufactured of paper stirpes.

This
model is another example of the most simple forms of scratchbuilding,
it's ideal just for newcomers. You nearly always succeed with such a model,
it's also ideal to fill gaps between two other houses. Such a model also offers
a good chance to make use of remainding parts from kits - parts which can't be used
otherwise quite good enough. There are porch roofs over the both entrance doors,
so nonetheless the model doesn't look too simple.
