| 4. A Block Of Flats From The 1960ies | ||

Buildings like this have been numerously
constructed in the 1960ies. Of course this model has been built with
cardboard, and plasterd with whitener afterwards. Finally, it was
painted with PLAKA colours. The window frames were drawn with a drawing
programme on the PC and painted with a water-insoluble felt-pen. I cut
them out and vitrified them with transparant plastic foil. The railings
of the balconies were originally garden fences; however, the posts have
been removed out and the single pieces were put together to a railings.

However, several problems with the cardboard appeared during the construction. If a wall is being plastered or painted, the material inevitably comes into contact with humidity, and the material is getting soaked. Unluckily, cardboard tends to warp when it gets soaked or just damp. As the parts for this house were large-sized and unluckily cardboard of a low thickness of material had been chosen, they started to warp, allthough I had tried to avoid the problem by applying only a thin layer of whitener. The problem is normaly subdued with smaller houses if one chooses the right thickness of material. Finally, the problem was solved, as the walls were reinforced on the inner surface with several bracings. |

| But even if the mentioned problems mainly refered to low thickness of material, I recommend to use plastic for buildings of this size instead of cardboard. | ||
